GRADUATE PLAN OF STUDY
INSTRUCTIONS AND GUIDELINES

SECTION I: Student completes Section I

  • Consult with your Graduate Program Adviser and develop your individualized plan for degree completion.
  • List the courses in each section you plan to count toward your degree. 
    Limit of 10 credits at the 400 level.
    Limit of 10 credits of Independent Study (some departments are more restrictive).
  • Submit Prerequisite Courses on separate list. Use attach files option button in the submission block. 
  • Forward the form to your Graduate Program Adviser (or authorized Graduate Program Coordinator) for approval and submission to the Graduate School.
    ** If you have a designated Thesis Adviser, forward the form to your Thesis Adviser first.
    Thesis Adviser approves the form and forwards to Graduate Program Adviser (or authorized Graduate Program Coordinator).
  • Confer with your Graduate Program Adviser and the Graduate School regarding any subsequent changes to this Plan PRIOR to enrollment in any course not listed and approved on your plan.
  • Students enrolled in thesis credits beyond the maximum number allowed by the program may affect eligibility for financial aid. This information may be shared with the Financial Aid office for financial aid purposes.
  • You must be registered for at least two credits the quarter in which you graduate OR the preceding quarter. Summer quarter is not counted for students who have never enrolled for summer quarter. Auditing is not permitted.

SECTION II: Graduate Program Adviser completes Section II 
Transfer Credit

  • List transfer credits earned prior to admission to graduate program.
    Coursework taken prior to formal admission to a WWU master's degree program, whether at Western or another institution, can be considered for transfer credit if the criteria listed below are met.
  • List external concurrent credit at another institution (submit a syllabus of the course separately).
    Credit taken at another institution, concurrent with graduate status in a WWU master's degree program, can also be considered for tranfer credit if the criteria listed below are met. (Such coursework should be approved in advance of registration to prevent any misunderstanding or false expectation.)
    The criteria are:
    • A limit of nine quarter (six semester) credits;
    • Graded with a B, 3.0, or better;
    • Taken no more than three years prior to the student's quarter of admission;
    • And meet all other stated program and Graduate School requirements.

Special Skills or Language Requirement (if required).  Credits do not count toward degree requirements.

Admission Stipulations Credits do not count toward degree requirements.

  • List admission stipulations and specify minimum acceptable grade for each course.

ROUTING INSTRUCTIONS:
Student:
Complete Section I, then forward to your Graduate Program Adviser (or authorized Graduate Program Coordinator) for approval and submission. Forward the form to your Thesis Adviser if applicable.
Thesis Adviser: Thesis Adviser approves the form and forwards to Graduate Program Adviser (or authorized Graduate Program Coordinator).
Graduate Program Adviser (or authorized Graduate Program Coordinator): Forward the form to Gradschool@wwu.edu.  The student and adviser will be notified when the plan is approved.
